My dearest friend Michael,

Laugh and cry, I did. Funny to always remember that it was through working with you in Karme-Choling's finance department, that I first realised that I've never have never been a nice person - not a great asshole, but a fledgling asshol-ette. And, in seeing you through the years, I've learned of the bright emptiness of money. Nor will I forget throwing my younger brother into the wall, hard. Such red-faced, undeniable rage as the fulcrum of future purposeful stability.

You are awesome!

Love,
Allya

You're so damned honest Michael, that's what I like about you, not afraid to be transparent so the rest of us can laugh and contemplate the ways we are still afraid to write such things for the public to view

My father is that way. My mother's baby sister, Patricia, is 10 years younger than my parents. When my aunt Patricia and my father played checkers (he was in his 20's and she was barely a teen) if it looked like she might win the game he would turn the board over. He was also very well known for cheating at cards -- for cheating at anything if he was losing. I figure with guys like you and my father, champions through and through, it's just not fitting for you to lose.

So well written that even if I didn't know most of you as well as I do, I would have been able to visualize the whole thing. Most delightful just as you are Michael..

Funny. My favorite lines:

" . . . the raging asshole now cheerfully identified between bites of curry . . . " (never though of you that way, but this is has to be one of the more striking string of words I've run into lately).

"No longer interested in the past, Pops had turned his full attention to the coconut curry."

I think that we often get to the nut of a situation when we are eating together, especially eating out when no one is responsible for the food and we can just concentrate on conversation. I know my family, also Wasp, broached our most difficult conversations at the local Chinese restaurant.
I really enjoyed Michael's piece. I do suspect that the older sibling is usually a tyrant in some way to his/her younger siblings. I know I was.
